🎵 PRELUDE: Eyes of the World

The Grateful Dead was an American rock band formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California. They were known for their eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, folk, country, jazz, bluegrass, blues, rock and roll, gospel, reggae, world music, and psychedelia. The band was also known for their live performances and lengthy instrumental jams.

Grateful Dead’s music has always reminded me of the summer season. Back in the early 80s, I worked as a counselor in training with a bunch of dedicated Grateful Dead fans (“Dead Heads”) at a sleep-away camp in Massachusetts. During downtime and late into the evenings, we’d listen to “The Dead.” The band’s long and meditative grooves truly fit the vibe of those warm summer nights.

Right outside this lazy summer home
You ain’t got time to call your soul a critic, no
Right outside the lazy gate of winter’s summer home
Wondering where the nut-thatch winters
Wings a mile long just carried the bird away

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has its beaches, its homeland, and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
But the heart has its seasons, its evenings, and songs of its own

Jerry Garcia, The Grateful Dead’s principal songwriter, lead guitarist, and vocalist, would have turned 80 on August 1. The Bearsville Theater in Woodstock will be celebrating his birthday on July 30 at 8 pm, and Garcia’s at The Capitol in Port Chester invites everyone to join them for “Jerry’s 80th Dance Party” on Monday, August 1 at 8 pm.
