Hundreds of Yorktown residents poured into Jack DeVito Memorial Field behind the Yorktown Community and Cultural Center Friday night for the town’s seventh annual Relay for Life, the largest such event in the tri-state area. Despite intermittent showers, the large crowd’s energy didn’t flag — whether they were listening to Yorktown Town Supervisor Michael Grace, himself a cancer survivor, or dancing to Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory,” while led by trainers from Club Fit Jefferson Valley. The 12-hour event had a carnival feel to it, with dunk tanks, face painting, snacks and performances from groups like the Yorktown High School jazz band. And throughout it all, participants walked around the track in steady shifts meant to symbolizes the constancy of a cancer patient’s battle against the disease. Relay for Life is a subsidiary of the American Cancer Society.
