My name is John Rhodes and I am part of the two-thirds majority of Mount Kisco’s Democratic Party district leaders who voted to endorse Tom Luzio for mayor of our town. I voted this way because I believe Tom has the skills and courage to manage the town for the benefit of all our residents.

Ms. Meyer, author of last week’s misleading letter to the editor, was one of only three district leaders who voted to endorse Ms. Cerbone-Abzun’s candidacy. Contrary to the negative characterizations in Ms. Meyer’s letter, Tom’s responses during the candidate interview process were genuine, forthright and passionate. He talked about his love for the environment, and his disappointment with our unresponsive and inefficient local government. Tom’s disappointment is shared by many residents, and by a substantial majority of Democratic district leaders.

During the extensive candidate interviews conducted by the Democratic Committee, Mr. Luzio also voiced his strong support for a more effective local ethics law, which would include financial disclosures. He clearly stated his opposition to the sale of any public open space for commercial development and he committed to leverage the village’s Open Space Fund to increase public green space.

Ms. Cerbone-Abzun, on the other hand, said she would not support a stronger ethics law and was opposed to any financial disclosure requirements. She also refused to commit to protect existing village-owned green space, and has repeatedly opposed using the Open Space Fund to acquire available green space for preservation and use by village residents.

Mr. Luzio’s clear and unequivocal answers during the interview process, his admirable record as a successful lead prosecutor of dangerous drug dealers and other corrupt criminals and his efforts on behalf of justice fairness and court reform, all give me confidence in his ability to clean up our inefficient and ethically challenged village government. Since his endorsement, I’ve also had a chance to talk more with Tom about his specific concerns regarding public safety, and his plans to make our local government more transparent, ethical and responsive to the needs of all our residents.

I urge my fellow Mount Kisco residents to get to know Tom Luzio, his character and his lifelong record of community service. We need a mayor who will honestly and fearlessly work to address the needs of our entire community, especially when these interests differ from those of commercial real estate developers and other big business groups.
