There was nowhere Dorothy Trimmer would rather be to celebrate her recent promotion to captain in the United States Army than in her hometown of Ossining.

“I can’t thank this community enough for embracing me. It means the world to me,” a tearful Trimmer said Friday among family, friends and local elected officials at Senate Hook & Ladder Co. Ladder 41 where Ladies Auxiliary of Independent Hose Co. #6 hosted a ceremony for her accomplishment.

Trimmer, 34, enlisted in the Army in 2000 and served at Fort Stewart in Georgia, including a tour of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom. After earning a nursing degree at Armstrong Atlantic State University, she joined the Army Nurse Corps moved up to 1st lieutenant.

“This is amazing. She is most deserving of this promotion,” said fellow Army Captain Suin Ellison, who noted she and Trimmer crossed paths as nurses in Georgia. “Dorothy is a phenomenal nurse.”

Trimmer said she grew up on Main Street in Ossining before moving to Croton when she was about 11 years old, but always considered Ossining home.

“I always had a home to come home to and that’s very important,” she said with her mom, Mary Wheeler, beaming with pride in the front row. “Moving around all the time I never got a chance to celebrate anything, so I didn’t want to pass this up. That’s what’s great about this community. Your friends are always there when you come back.”

State Assemblywoman Sandra Galef (D/Ossining) and Town Supervisor Susanne Donnelly presented Trimmer with proclamations, while Ossining Village Mayer William Hanauer offered words of congratulations.

“This is an extraordinary moment,” he said. “This doesn’t happen every day in the Village of Ossining. It’s great that you’ve come back to us for this.”
