Minus Full-Day Kindergarten, Mahopac Budget Passes

After the board scrapped plans to expand to a full-day kindergarten program, the Mahopac School District’s 2011-2012 budget passed, on its second try, with 54 percent supporting it Tuesday.

The $111,011,490 budget represents an approximately $1.8 million decrease from the budget voted down on May 17. The budget, which passed with 1,929 votes for and 1,636 votes against, will increase the tax levy by 2.44 percent. The budget originally proposed would have increased the tax levy by 3.89 percent.

In its original budget, the Mahopac Board of Education proposed expanding from half-day to full-day kindergarten. Because of increases in state aid, the switch would have cost approximately $200,000 in 2011-2012 but would have led to greater cost hikes in future years. The board abandoned those plans in order to ensure the budget’s passage.

Had the budget failed, Mahopac would have been forced to go to its $110,402,393 contingency budget.
