Southeast Town Clerk Ruth Mazzei

After nearly 20 years in the position, Southeast Town Clerk Ruth Mazzei announced Thursday she will not seek re-election.

Mazzei made the announcement at a press conference outside 1 Main Street in Brewster in front of family, friends and supporters. Mazzei has frequently clashed with Supervisor Michael Rights and Councilman Dwight Yee and said the stress of serving on the board with the duo was the main reason for her retirement.

Mazzei, a Republican, was elected in 1991 to the first of five four-year terms.

Michele Stancati, currently the deputy town clerk, will run to be Mazzei’s successor. On Wednesday, Stancati earned the unanimous endorsement of the Southeast Republican Committee.
