Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney, who represents the 18 N.Y. Congressional District, participated in a swearing in ceremony at Mahopac Public Library on Sunday, Jan. 27.

Maloney, who was given the Oath of Office by Hon. Maria Rosa, N.Y. supreme court justice, was surrounded by supporters and other elected officials from the Democratic Party including Senate Minority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Assemblywoman Sandy Galef and Assemblyman David Buchwald.

Ma l o n e y ’ s priority was to assure people that his focus was on his district and the people he represents not on the games of Washington politics.

Maloney cited three things he wanted to focus on while in office.

“First, I want keep people at the center of my service,” said Maloney. “For me everything we do in Congress should be related back to someone who is affected by that.”

Then Maloney brought up the importance of community.

“My job is not going to Washington to be in Washington, my job is to go to Washington and speak on behalf of all of you,” said Maloney. “I want to stay hometown, not Hollywood.”

Finally, admitting that he does not have all the answers himself, Maloney is seeking input.

“I don’t see this as my job along. I see this as a team sport… I need all of you,” he said. “I need you to be my partner in all of this and I can only be successful at this if I am smart enough to listen more than I talk. That means working across party lines, working with whoever makes sense.”

To give the program a very local atmosphere the Putnam County Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, Girl Scouts from the Mahopac Service Unit and Sean Terwilliger of the Lake Carmel Troop #14 Boy Scouts participated in the ceremony.
