It was a very tough decision this year to select the 2012 White Plains Examiner White Plains High School Spring Male Athlete of the Season. As the WPHS Golf Team won the Section 1 Conference II Championship and Sean Trainor and Tyler Stagg produced on the links at a remarkable pace.

However, when all considerations were evaluated his statistics last season exalted junior catcher Kyle Adams, a captain of the White Plains High School Varsity Baseball Team, above all other candidates.

Adams made 79 plate appearances for the Tigers in 2012, while being credited with 63 at bats. The Tigers number-three hitter had 27 hits with eight extra-base hits and 20 RBIs.

Adams amassed an extraordinary .491 batting average in 2012, with a notable .620 on-base-percentage, scoring 23 runs and stealing 14 out of 17 bases.

On defense, the Tigers catcher also threw out 18 potential base-stealers out of 35 stolen base attempts for a 51 percent caught-stealing ratio.

In view of his exceptional performance on the baseball diamond this spring, Kyle Adams, the junior catcher for the Tigers Baseball Team is our 2012 White Plains Examiner White Plains High School Spring Male Athlete of the Season.

“I thank the White Plains Examiner for selecting me for this award,” said the Tigers captain, while stressing the importance of teamwork and thanking his teammates and coaches for their support, when accepting the award. “It just feels special, all the hard work our entire team put in with good coaches during the season; it just pays off.”

“I am extremely happy for him. I think it is very well deserved,” acknowledged Tigers Head Coach Marcel Galligani. “Kyle put in the necessary work to achieve the award and he had a phenomenal season.”

Adams was also voted by the Section 1 coaches to the All Section Team and distinguished as a Second Team All Star on The Journal News/LoHud.com Westchester/Putnam All Star Team.

Adams’s teammate last season, Tigers senior pitcher/shortstop Steven Schiavone, was also voted to the All Section Team and he received Honorable-Mention on the Journal News/LoHud All Star Team. Also, Tigers senior infielder/outfielder Eric Smiley received Honorable Mention All Section and was recognized with a Diamond 9 Award.

Adams was presented the White Plains Examiner WPHS Spring Male Athlete of the Season Award on the field at WPHS on Friday, July 13. He had just returned the previous evening from the East Cobb Facility, in Marietta, Ga. At East Cobb, baseball scouts gathered to evaluate prominent high school baseball players from around the United States.

Adam traveled to Georgia with World Yacht Clippers, which is a showcase team composed of standout public and private high school baseball players from across Westchester County.
Adams stands six-feet and two-inches tall and weighs about 200 pounds. The Tigers catcher is a varsity three-letter man at WPHS, playing baseball, basketball and running cross country track.

But what is most impressive about the now senior Adams, considering his progression in WPHS athletics, is that he is only 16 years old and will not be 17, until October.

Regarding his future Adams revealed. “I hope over the summer to get a few looks from colleges for baseball and then hopefully by the fall next year make a decision about where to attend college.”

“I hope only the best for Kyle,” stated Galligani. “I think there is going to be many, many more good things to come from him in the future. I do not think that Kyle has even come close to reaching his full potential,” projected the Tigers Head Coach.

Adams is the youngest child of longtime White Plains residents Bob and Sue Adams, whose family has historical roots in White Plains High School Athletics.

Kyle’s mother, Sue, was the Head Coach of White Plains Girls Basketball for 11 seasons. Kyle’s sister Kim was on the Tigers Girls basketball teams that won three consecutive Section 1 Championships (2005-07) under the tutelage of their mother Sue. Kyle’s older brother Ryan played varsity basketball for the Tigers and now plays for Ursinus College, in Collegeville, Pa. Also, Bob Adams is a longtime Division-1 NCAA Basketball Official.
