Off duty Elmsford police officer Kenneth Gumbs, 45, remains in critical but stable condition at Westchester Medical Center with internal and head injuries  after being struck by a car Sunday night on Bradhurst Avenue near Chateau Lane in Hawthorne at about 8:20 p.m. He appeared to be trying to cross the road.

The Westchester County police accident reconstruction team is assisting the investigation. Bradhurst Avenue, which is Route 100, was closed for several hours on Sunday as police investigated. Police reports indicate the driver of the car stopped at the scene and was cooperative. The investigation is continuing.
