Raid the Sanctuary Adventure Run Scheduled for July 22

We are part of The Trust Project
Raid the Sanctuary, an adventure run for the public, will be held on July 22 at Westmoreland Santuary in Mount Kisco.

On Sunday, July 22 the public can join Raid the Sanctuary, an adventure run in Westmoreland Sanctuary in Mount Kisco.

The race, consisting of teams of two, will include various forms of on- and off-trail navigation similar to orienteering, trail running, dirt road run and other mystery sections. Think “Walk the Line,” “Mini Score,” “Which Control” and others.

The sanctuary has 640 acres of open woods and good trails so running should be fast. There will be two races, The “Barbarians Attack” of around 12-plus kilometers (7.5+ miles) and the “Viking Challenge” of more than six kilometers (4+ miles). It is expected that the overall time for Barbarians will be in the order of three to four hours. (There will be water stops on the courses.) Both races will mass start at 9 a.m.

Races will use electronic punching and preprinted maps; electronic punches will be available to rent if you do not have one, as will compasses.

Participants must be at least 12 years old to compete on the Viking Course, unless they have orienteering experience and are accompanied by an adult, and at least 16 years old to compete on the Barbarian Course unless they can demonstrate previous comparable adventure/orienteering experience.

Pre-registration, at www.WestmorelandSanctuary.org is required for participation and is due by 5 p.m. on Friday, July 20. Check-in is from 8 to 9 am on the day of the event to pick up bibs, maps and other goodies. Race will begin promptly at 9 a.m.

If you have never done competitive orienteering, participate with a friend who has or sign up for a navigation clinic at the sanctuary on Saturday, July 21 and run the Viking course the next day.

For more information contact the race secretary at Westmoreland Sanctuary at 914-666-8448 or by e-mail at westsanc@optonline.net. The sanctuary is located at 260 Chestnut Ridge Rd. in Mount Kisco.
