P’ville Considers Sale of Village Hall

Pleasantville Village Hall

Pleasantville officials are considering a major move that would see village hall sold to a private enterprise and turn the United Methodist Church on Bedford Road into the new municipal building.

Mayor Peter Scherer said Thursday night on his PCTV cable show “Inside Government” that the church would then buy the village’s old recreation center on Great Oak Lane and move its operations to that site. The recreation department vacated the old center in late 2007.

Scherer said if the move came to fruition it would benefit Pleasantville because it would return the village hall, located at 80 Wheeler Ave., to the tax rolls. The current church building also has a layout that is compatible with the village’s needs, including a community room with an attached kitchen. He stressed that discussions about the plan are in the very early stages, and there is no certainty that it will occur.

“It gives us an opportunity to have a version of the (recreation) facility we’ve been talking about,” Scherer said. “No one has money to build a recreation center.”

If the sale goes through, the police department would likely remain at the current village hall with Pleasantville renting the space.
