The Putnam County Legislature last week approved spending $131,000 for Sheriff Department deputies and investigators to wear body cameras.

With the authorization, Putnam joined about 20 other counties in New York State to use the cameras. Body cameras were one of the top recommendations made last year by a committee created to review policies and procedures used by the Sheriff’s Department.

Meanwhile, the Legislature also gave the go-ahead for the Sheriff’s Department to use a $74,764 state grant to purchase and install license plate reader equipment.

License plate reader equipment has been found useful in locating stolen vehicles, suspects and missing persons, and conducting surveillance checks.
