Westchester County Police recently responded to concerns raised by town officials and Cortlandt residents by issuing 125 summonses for speeding on Watch Hill Road.7166271707_db37ffa80b_z

The enforcement campaign was funded by the Cortlandt Town Board following community complaints about motorists driving at excessive speeds through the residential area.

“Speeding in residential neighborhoods creates a danger to other motorists, to people who are out jogging or walking, and to children who are playing or riding bicycles,” Public Safety Commissioner George N. Longworth said. “The goal of this increased enforcement is to make Watch Hill Road safer for all who travel the road and live in the area.”

Longworth noted that Westchester County police officers assigned to patrol Cortlandt conduct speed enforcement regularly throughout the town.

Cortlandt Supervisor Linda Puglisi said it’s important for residents to take is slow on residential roadways to prevent accidents and injuries.

“Watch Hill Road is a major through road in our community and periodically residents have asked our two Police Departments to increase their speed patrols on Watch Hill Road, which has two schools, and on other roads,” Puglisi said.  “This effort is now placed on Watch Hill Road in central Cortlandt, however, patrols at all times continue throughout the town.”

The speed enforcement campaign on Watch Hill Road, which was announced publicly before it began, is still under way and will continue throughout the summer, according to Longworth.
