A Patterson man was killed Wednesday evening in a car accident at the intersection of Routes 22 and 164 in the town, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office reported in a statement released late Wednesday night.

Investigation suggests James Dalton, a 79-year-old Farm to Market Road resident, entered the intersection while trying to make a left turn onto Route 22, according to the sheriff’s office. Dalton failed to yield the right of way and a little before 6 p.m., his 2000 Ford station wagon was struck by a 2011 Mazda suburban driven by 54-year-old Bronxville resident Robert Kulason, the sheriff’s office stated. After colliding, the cars drove off the highway and hit a third car parked in a private driveway.

The sheriff’s office received a 9-1-1 call reporting the accident at approximately 5:50 p.m. and Deputy Shannon Schnaars, who was nearby, responded to the scene. Dalton was taken by Putnam County’s TransCare Ambulance Service to Putnam Hospital Center’s Emergency Department, where he later died from his injuries, the sheriff’s office reported. Kulason was uninjured.

The sheriff’s Accident Reconstruction Team and Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene, and the investigation is ongoing, the sheriff’s office stated.
