A Croton-based contractor reached a deal with the Town of Yorktown last week to purchase an historic home on Route 132 that he plans to renovate and restore for affordable housing.

“This is a day that everyone has been waiting for. We’re very thrilled that we’ll see the preservation of this historical structure,” said Yorktown Supervisor Michael Grace.

Yorktown has owned the Adams-Bernstein House at 3147 Old Yorktown Road and its surrounding seven acres for 20 years. The early Victorian, three-bedroom home dates back to 1830 and had fallen into disrepair.

With the assistance of realtor Bill Primavera of Coldwell Banker, Yorktown found a buyer in Mark Franzoso of Franzoso Contracting, who paid $170,000 for the property, which also includes a barn that was once used by theater groups.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for me to undertake and restore an old house and give back to the Town of Yorktown. It’s a way for me to say thank you,” Franzoso said. “My intention is to keep it intact. I hope to bring it back to what it once was.”

Franzoso said it would take about a year to complete the renovations to the home and the barn. He also plans to subdivide the property.

“There are so many possibilities,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to this opportunity.”

Grace credited the newly formed Citizens for a Progressive Yorktown with helping the town reach its goal of progress with preservation.

“We’re hoping this group gets involved in things to help move the town forward, such as zoning code changes,” said Grace. “It represents kind of the new thinking in government to be creative and innovative. This is the approach government has to take. This is a very symbolic first step towards it.”

“This is a small project with very big results,” said Primavera, who also represents Citizens for a Progressive Yorktown.
