Cortlandt Uses Surplus to Fund $2.5M Paving Projects
The Town of Cortlandt is in the process of paving or resurfacing roadways throughout the town by utilizing $2.5 million from the highway surplus fund.
Supervisor Linda Puglisi explained a staff committee reviewed 70 miles of roads in the town last spring to determine which were in most need of attention this fall, and with $3 million available in savings, no borrowing or bonding was required. The Town Board approved the work in July.
“We are very proud of the fact that we’ve never had to borrow for repaving of our roads during this 23-year administration,” Puglisi said. “Pay as you go has always been our approach, which is why we continue to have low debt.”
In addition, during Puglisi’s tenure, eight miles of sidewalks have been constructed or repaired since 1992 and more sidewalks are being designed, including on Route 9A.
“Sidewalks are important because they connect one area of town to the next, they are safer for pedestrian travel, and we will construct more sidewalks in the upcoming years,” Puglisi said.
