Chappaqua Ready to Hold a Really Great Bake Sale

We are part of The Trust Project
The third annual Great Chappaqua Bake Sale that will raise money to battle childhood is set for Saturday on South Greeley Avenue.

Anyone who develops a craving for sweets this weekend can get their fill of delectable treats and contribute to a good cause at the same time.

The third annual Great Chappaqua Bake Sale is set for this Saturday, Sept. 29 in the courtyard outside 1 S. Greeley Ave. by Chappaqua Framing from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Organized by adults and children in the community, all money raised will be donated to Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale campaign. The organization, the largest fighting childhood hunger in the country, is dedicated to making sure every youngster in the United States has enough to eat within the next three years.

Co-chair Allison Spiegel said a couple of years ago she was one of several parents in Chappaqua who thought it was a good idea to teach their youngsters that there are plenty of families, including some living in nearby communities, who are less fortunate. It is estimated that nationwide about 16 million children go hungry.

“It seemed like a good way to get the children involved and to give back,” Spiegel said.

Last year, the sale raised $12,000, which nearly doubled the initial effort in 2010 and ranked second highest of all Share Our Strength teams in the nation. The initial goal is to match last year’s total. Since it’s a New York-based team, all money raised will go to help a program within the state.

The biggest draw of the event once again may be the high quality services and merchandise donated by local merchants that will be raffled off, Spiegel said. Dozens of area businesses are participating in the raffle, with the value of the prizes in some instances topping $1,000, she said.

Some of the local food and bake shops will also be donating product for sale, along with community members who will be baking into the night to provide fresh treats. Similar to last year there will be a guessing jar for children while a face painter has been added to the activities.

Once again this year, organizers have a large tent available so in case of rain the show can go on.
