Byram Lake Safe After Truck Accident and Oil Spill

A one-vehicle accident on Tuesday that caused oil to spill into Byram Lake posed no environmental threat, Mount Kisco officials reported.

Village Manager James Palmer said the Bedford Police Department received a phone call on April 23 at about 3:15 p.m. reporting a pick-up truck had gone off the road coming to rest partially in the water.

Palmer said the spill was contained and remediated in the evening by Tri-State Environmental Services, in conjunction with the state Department of Environmental Conservation. The oil entered the northeastern most portion of Byram Lake, he said. The lake is the village’s sole drinking water source.

“Tri-State Consortium pumped out about 800 gallons of water yesterday,” Palmer said on Wednesday. “The water supply was in no way compromised and the water continues to be safe to drink.”

Booms were used and swept the surface of the water. Any oil left on the surface will evaporate, Palmer said.

A Westchester County Hazmat team joined firefighters from Mount Kisco, Bedford and Armonk and the Bedford Police Department in responding to the incident. The truck was removed from the scene at about 6:30 p.m., Palmer noted.

The village continues to filter all water through its filtration plant according to federal and state standards, he said.
