Armonk A&P to Close By Feb. 1

The Armonk A&P is now scheduled to close at the end of the month

It appears that the Armonk A&P is in its final days.

The Examiner learned Friday that the supermarket, which has operated in the Armonk Shopping Center for more than 40 years, will be shuttered for good by Feb. 1. While no official closing date has been confirmed by the supermarket’s parent corporation, the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., store personnel stated this week they have been told that the targeted date for shutting down operations is at the end of the month.

This week the store’s interior and exterior were plastered with “Store Closing” and “Up to 30% Off” signs. That came less than a week after the company’s corporate headquarters released a brief one-sentence statement mentioned that the store was “in the process of winding down operations” but did not confirm a closure date.

A CVS Pharmacy is scheduled to move into the roughly 20,000-square foot space. Last year, a CVS spokesman stated that it would take several months to refurbish the interior of the store before the pharmacy could open to the public.

Once the A&P closes, it will mark the start of about one year that the hamlet will be without a supermarket. DeCicco Family Markets is slated to move into the new Armonk Square when construction for that project is finished on Main Street later this year or early in 2013.
