Film and Conversation: “Frida.” Discussion led by LIU Professor Valerie Franco. Tonight’s film, directed by Julie Taymor, is a lush biography of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, who channeled a crippling injury and her tempestuous marriage to Diego Rivera into her work. SATURDAY – SEPTEMBER 29

Bird Walk. Two noted bird experts from the Teatown Lake Reservation will lead a walk on the proposed Greens to Green Conservancy at the French American School, White Plains beginning at 8am. The guided tour will give birders and nature lovers alike the opportunity to explore the diverse bird species at the former golf course. The bird walk will be guided by Charlie Roberto, a Teatown Lake Reservation trustee and a well known expert on bird life. He will be joined by Dr. Mike Rubbo, Director of Conservation Science at Teatown. Both have an extensive knowledge of the bird species found in the region. Dr. Rubbo is currently overseeing a biodiversity study of the property for FASNY. Walkers should gather at the former Ridgeway Clubhouse at 400 Ridgeway, White Plains. Refreshments will be served. White Plains Columbus Day Festival. Two-day celebration Sat. noon to 10 p.m. and Sun. noon to 9 p.m. campus of White Plains High School, 550 North Street, White Plains. Enter on North Street entrance. Parking and admission are free. Food including the best zeppoles in New York, traditional carnival rides and games, jewelry, craft goods and toys for sale, live music and dancing. Italian-American music on Saturday by Don Felice, and New York’s Number 1 Elvis Impersonator, Gene DiNapoli, will perform. Sunday night will be filled with classic doo-wop harmonies of Larry Chance and the Earls. Also on display from Fiat of Larchmont, classic Italian sports cars and Vespas. 3 p.m. on Saturday, White Plains Columbus Day Parade Committee Scholarship awards followed by the WPHS band.

Western Howls: Bringing Balance Back to Yellowstone. Come for a special talk about the wolves of Yellowstone National Park.  Hear about wolf reintroduction, the beneficial ecological effect wolves have had on our nation’s first national park and the debate that surrounds this controversial predator in the West. Guests will visit Ambassador wolves Atka, Alawa and Zephyr as well as the critically endangered red wolves and Mexican gray wolves. Weather appropriate treats served; bring flashlights. Ramble By the River. Come explore one of the newest gems on the Hudson River – the Kathryn W. Rails to Trails. Multiple narrow-gauge trail lines ran through the preserve a century ago and signs of them can still be found during this two-mile walk mixing nature study, archaeology and local history. Celebrating Lady Bird Johnson. In honor of the 100th anniversary of Lady Bird Johnson’s birth, The Native Plant Center will host a celebration of her life and legacy. Includes a rededication of the Lady Bird Johnson Demonstration Garden, a visual tribute to  Johnson’s conservation efforts and the presentation of the center’s Lady Bird Johnson Environmental Award to Todd Forrest of The New York Botanical Garden.
