White Plains Mayor Tom Roach

After declaring a State of Emergency Friday, White Plains Mayor Tom Roach again took action Saturday in preparation for Hurricane Irene, ordering bars, restaurants and theaters to close by 9 p.m. Saturday night and opening several city garages for free parking. Meanwhile, on-street parking is banned throughout the city from midnight on Saturday to 7 a.m. Monday, as the worst of the storm is expected to hit overnight and Sunday morning.

Until 7 a.m. Monday, parking is free in the Chester-Maple, Hamilton-Main, Longview Avenue and Lexington-Grove (Galleria) garages.

Beginning 7 a.m. Sunday, a shelter will be established at the Post Road Elementary School, located at 175 West Post Road. Anyone needing shelter overnight is asked to call the White Plains Department of Public Safety at (914) 422-6111.

The city has also established a dedicated phone line – (914) 422-5150 – that people can call for updates during the storm. Residents can also visit the city’s website (www.cityofwhiteplains.com) or watch the city’s government access channels, Cablevision channel 75 and Verizon channel 47, for announcements, the mayor said.
