White Plains High Students Win United Civic Engagement Awards

Six White Plains High School students received Civic Engagement Awards from Grandpas United and the White Plains Youth Bureau.
Britney Gramajo Barrios, Charleine Dhaiti, Rasha Elwakil, David Juarez, Helennith Jurado, and Zaida Polanco were named award recipients last week.
In announcing the winners, Grandpas United said the six winning students have served people of all ages in the community, noting, “They have done so as part of the Youth Bureau, The Youth Court, their local churches, towns, and various social justice groups, WP Hospital and Library, and WP High School. Beyond the “normal volunteer activities” included in civic engagement, they have won awards form other organizations, become part of various youth movements to support young women of color, environmental justice, and children of immigrants, become board members in their organizations, worked with the homeless, taught younger students about computer science and robotics, and tons more.”
The student’s future plans include nursing, entrepreneurship, the law, politics, and perhaps starring on Broadway
The mission of Grandpas United is to utilize their talents, skills and experiences to improve the community. Members aspire to serve as male role models and mentors to enhance the growth and development of youth, while sharing their talents and experiences with one another, enabling them to maintain their dignity, self-respect and self-worth.
