As you may already know, Emiljana Ulaj is running to be our voice as county legislator because she believes, as I do, that government can, and should, be a force for good in people’s lives.

Emiljana came to this country as a child, and it’s her experiences as a refugee that shape her values in wanting to pay forward the opportunities that were afforded to her.

Emiljana has worked in the state legislature for Sen. Shelley Mayer, for the labor union SEIU 32BJ, and most recently, for the state teacher’s union, NYSUT. Emiljana cares deeply about others, and she believes that the government’s role is to create the conditions for people to thrive. Through this lens, and using the tools available through the county government, she will focus on affordability, sustainability and engaging more people in the halls of power.

I am particularly drawn to Emiljana’s platform on the environment. Westchester County oversees the Bee-Line Bus system, but for most of us who can afford a car, the system is too slow and the express buses too infrequent to be considered a viable alternative to a car. If we want to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions, expanding public transportation has to be part of the equation.

At the top of Emiljana’s environmental platform is proactive oversight of the management of the Bee-Line Bus to enhance and expand service so that more people can regularly use the service. This won’t be accomplished overnight, but it’s a worthwhile goal that we must support if we are serious about combating the effects of climate change.

In addition to her focus on public transportation, Emiljana will also use her role in county government to support the creation and expansion of municipal composting programs, and to find additional opportunities for renewable energy generation sources right here in northern Westchester.

I’ve known Emiljana for many years, and I truly believe her heart is in the right place when it comes to entering public service. Her experience in government and her relationships with local, county, state and federal leaders will position her well to be a highly effective county legislator.

Thank you for your consideration!
