Pleasantville community leaders have been regularly reminding residents for more than a month about the upcoming day that celebrates the village. Now Pleasantville Day has finally arrived here.

Saturday, May 18, is the annual celebration which brings much of the village together. Festivities begin at 10 a.m. and continue until late afternoon, with most of the action taking place on Memorial Plaza.

There will be games and rides for children, vendors and demonstrations, but it will also be a day to stroll outside on the plaza with a chance to stop and talk to neighbors.

Mayor Peter Scherer said the event brings together most of the organizations in the village, including nonprofits, municipal committees, school clubs, athletic teams and merchants, and the day of fun creates community camaraderie.

One addition the past few years has been the high school art show that takes place at the Jacob Burns Film Center.

“It’s a great day and we look forward to it every year,” Scherer said.

The event will go on as planned, even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, Chamber of Commerce President William Flooks said. Flooks said in his nine years that he has been involved with Pleasantville Day, there has only been sunny weather, which he hopes to see once again this year. Saturday’s forecast is for sun and clouds with a high of 72 degrees.

“As long as it’s a nice day, it’ll be a great day,” Flooks said. “Pleasantville Day always is a great day.”

Flooks said he estimates about 90 percent of the residents show up sometime during the day, which gives merchants a golden opportunity to showcase their businesses.

Flooks anticipates this year’s celebration to be grander than ever.

“Every year it gets bigger and bigger,” Flooks said. “It’s a great day for the village next to the musical festival. It’s one of the best days ever.”
