This is in response to last week’s letter to the editor from several Putnam organizations, including the Putnam Progressives.

This definition of racism is taken directly from http://www.britannica.com:

“racism, also called racialism, the belief that humans may be divided into separate and exclusive biological entities called ‘races’; that there is a causal link between inherited physical traits and traits of personality, intellect, morality, and other cultural and behavioral features; and that some races are innately superior to others.”

Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne is not stoking any racist fears. He is protecting our county, something Joe Biden should be doing for our country. There is no fearmongering or xenophobia, but there is a very real desire to protect the legal citizens of Putnam County. He is doing exactly what we elected him to do, which is keep our county safe and financially solvent.

Maybe you didn’t see the news stories about the damage and chaos the busloads of illegal immigrants caused in the hotels in New York City. We want that here? I don’t think so.

Xenophobia, which is defined by britannica.com as such:

“Xenophobia, fear and contempt of strangers or foreigners or of anything designated as foreign, or a conviction that certain foreign individuals and cultures represent a threat to the authentic identity of one’s own nation-state and cannot integrate into the local society peacefully.”

We don’t fear these people; we fear for the welfare of our county. Mr. Byrne wants to protect that.

What these people experienced in their countries should only be of concern to us if they ask to come here legally while still in their own country. We cannot take every person from every country who wants to come here. Our ancestors came here under a rigid system of immigration and so should anyone else. It protects us and them.
