Taking Issue With Last Week’s Column About the ‘Far Left’

I want to take issue with Michael Gold’s column in last week’s issue (“Far Left Prescriptions for Our Nation Are Far Out of Step”). To compare the extremism of the hate-filled attack on democracy with so-called “extremist left” support for police reform, healthcare for all and questioning the excesses of capitalism is nothing short of outrageous.

Despite Gold’s claim that these views are “badly out of sync with the vast majority of Americans,” in recent polling healthcare for all had nearly 60 percent support and, though a minority, police reform and concern about the excesses of capitalism draw significant support.

Opinion columns should stimulate constructive conversation on the important issues of our time. They should not ignore the facts nor resort to mindless “what about-isms.”
