Take a Stay-cation to Eataly

We’re all tired of winter, and if you’re like me, longing for the tastes of summer.  I found them on my visit this week to Eataly.  A project of the B&B Hospitality group, Eataly is a gastronomic wonder. There are marketplaces selling all things food, such as pastas (4 aisles worth!), fish, cheeses, meats, wines, produce, and many non-edibles, most imported from Italy.

Tucked in next to each marketplace are food counters or tables where you can order plates of what is sold at that market.  There is also a more formal restaurant that accepts reservations, called Manzo, where I ate.  In true Italian style, the menu offers Primi (first course) of pastas, and Secondi of meat and fish.  They also have a delightful choice of antipasti, and the dessert menu is unique and inviting.  The wine list is extensive and the sommelier is more than happy to offer expert suggestions to highlight your food pairing.

Of course shopping is the other main attraction.  I could have wandered the aisles for days!  Just the olive oil section is an adventure.  There are pastas of every shape and size, both dried and fresh.  Sauces starting with common ingredients like tomatoes, up to exotic truffled butter sauce.  So many cheeses- I was in heaven!  One of the best parts was the sampling stations. A small taste of the panettone with raisins and I had to buy a loaf… or three.   I could go on and on, but I won’t.  I will simply tell you to go experience it for yourself.  Judging by the kid-in-a-candy-store look on everyone’s faces, including mine, you will enjoy the escape to Eataly.

Eataly is located at 200 5th Avenue in New York City.
