Good Counsel vs. Maria Regina

The best sports rivalry in the area this fall just might be between the soccer squads of the Maria Regina Tigers and the Good Counsel Cougars in soccer. These two soccer powerhouses met on a gloomy match Wednesday with an atmosphere that is usually reserved for playoff games.

These two teams are pretty evenly matched up and down their rosters. The Tigers might be slightly faster and they play a more physical game of soccer than the Cougars.

This game ended up coming down to one play when Cougars’ goalie Maeve Power came out about 25 feet ahead of the field to try a high kick that was heading in her direction. The Tigers best player Megan Caspare got to the ball about two seconds before Power and she managed to delicately chip the ball over the head of Power and into the net for the winning goal.

These two teams will lock horns at least one more time this year. They will play under the lights at Manhattanville College in several weeks. With the loss the Cougars dropped to 3-1 on the season. Don’t be surprised to see these teams meet for a third time in late October/early November in the playoffs.

White Plains Boys

There is no doubt this fall which team is having the most spectacular season. The White Plains Boys Soccer season currently has a record of 7-1-1 at publication time and last week they had two solid league wins over New Rochelle and Mount Vernon.

Brian Vasquez and Omar Figueroa both scored in the match against New Rochelle. Shiloh Alexander and Christian Vergara both had assists in the game.

According to Tigers head coach Marcel Galligani, Daniel Murillo, Leo Fisher, Derlis Zayas and GK Alejandro Romero had played solid in the victory over New Rochelle.

“We didn’t really play well as a team but found a way to win ugly by grinding it out,” said Galligani after the victory.

On Friday the Tigers defeated the Mount Vernon Knights by the score of 5-1. Vergara had two goals and one assist in the match. Daniel Guerra, Camilo Vargas and Omar Serrano also had shots find the back of the nets versus the Knights. Goalie Romero recorded one save in the victory

White Plains Girls

“We are 1-3.  I’m pleased with how determined the team is. We had a time trial to start the season and the girls are working on goals now,” said Tigers head coach Patricia Gilmartin about the start of the 2012 season.

“Kaitlin Doherty has qualified for sectionals in the 50 and 100 free. She is working incredibly hard. Freshmen Amanda Broderick, Katie Avezzano, Caroline Wissell, Imani  Eiting and Nancy Becerra give a strong basis for the lineup.  Jena Schoenherr, Sara Caputi, Kelsey Straub, Sarah Lumelsky, Claire Nataro and Arya Vasudevan round out the events. The team is looking forward to divisionals at White Plains and qualifiers for sectionals. Kaitlin Doherty is aiming for states,” said Gilmartin.
