Sally Louise Martin (nee Ryder) of Yorktown, cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, cousin and friend, passed away peacefully on Mar. 12 at the age of 89.

She was born in Ossining to Landon and Muriel Ryder on Aug. 22, 1933.

Sally worked at Reader’s Digest where she met her beloved husband, Robert, of Tarrytown. They married on June 5, 1954, and moved to Yorktown a few years later. She volunteered so much of her time for so many, including for the First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown, the Mohegan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, as a Brownie leader and many school and civic organizations. Sally enjoyed hosting parties and spending time with family and her many friends, and had a love of reading, Scrabble and for all animals, especially her many dogs.

In 1989, Sally and Bob retired to beautiful Harwich Port, Mass. on Cape Cod. She immersed herself in many organizations there as well, including the Pilgrim Congregational Church, the APCC and the Harwich Garden Club to name a few. Sally loved the Cape and the many friends she made there.

She moved back to Yorktown in 2003 after Bob’s passing, and jumped right back in to her volunteering and social activities, including her service on the board of the Friends of the John C. Hart Memorial Library for many years. Sally, aka Mema, never missed her grandchildren’s games, plays or events and was, of course, their biggest fan!

Sally is survived by her son, John, and his wife, Denise, of Mohegan Lake; grandchildren Brad and Heather; great-grandson Michael; son Stuart of Scottsdale, Ariz.; daughter Lisa Graham and her husband, James, of Yorktown; grandchildren Robert, Elizabeth and Austin; her sister, Irene Linden, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; niece Valerie Linden of Colorado; her children, Nicholas and Andrew; and many adored cousins. Sally’s brother, Stuart of Elgin, Ill., predeceased her.

The family asks that anyone wishing to make gifts in Sally’s memory please consider the First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown Food Pantry, SPCA Westchester in Briarcliff Manor, the John C. Hart Memorial Library in Shrub Oak or the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), four of the many organizations near and dear to her heart.

There will be a well-deserved Celebration of Life Service for Sally at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 2 at the First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown, 2880 Crompond Rd., Yorktown Heights, N.Y. All are welcome to attend the service and gathering after.
