Nicole D’Addona and Gianna San Lucas have a very special reason to attend Town Day in Putnam Valley this year.  Their artwork will be decorating the front and back of t-shirts made especially for the occasion.

D’Addona, 14, a student at Putnam Valley High School and Gianna, 10, who attends Putnam Valley Middle School, were selected as the winners of the 2012 Town Day T-shirt design contest.

Putnam Valley Councilperson Jackie Annabi, the principal organizer of Town Day, conceived the contest as a way to promote youth involvement in the annual town-wide celebration, scheduled this year for Sept. 22.

“Town Day is a day where our youth and members of the community can come together, have fun and be safe,” said Annabi. “Where parents know they can take their family out for the day see a parade,  play games, go on rides , eat great food and see amazing fireworks all in one place and not feel as though they broke the bank.”

Putnam Valley Arts member Kathy Colonna, who administered the contest, was very appreciative of the collaborative efforts of PVCSD school superintendent Barbara Fuchs and the art teachers at all 3  schools. Their decision to devote class time to the project ensured participation by a large number of district students.  Over 150 submissions were received as a result of this unprecedented cooperation.

The t-shirts made their debut at the town board meeting on July 18, where San Lucas and her parents were introduced by Annabi, and congratulated by Supervisor Robert Tendy and Councilpersons Wendy Whetsel and Steven McKay.  All present gave a rousing hand of applause to recognize San Lucas’ efforts, and to D’Addona, who could not be present that evening.

Annabi has provided further incentive for purchasing and wearing the shirts. “Wear your Town Day Shirt with pride on Saturday Sept 22 and get $5.00 off all-day wristbands,” she said.

Carnival rides were a big hit with the Towns’ youth and their parents last year, and provider C and N Amusements of Newburgh has promised even more action at this year’s celebration.

Shirts are available for purchase now by contacting Annabi at town hall, or through the Facebook page “Putnam Valley Town Day”.  Shirts cost $10 each, 3 for $21; and are available in sizes youth medium through Adult XXL.   Shirts will also be sold on site on Sept. 22, at Leonard Wagner Memorial Park.
