Putnam County Undersheriff Peter Convery died suddenly aftersuffering an apparent heart attack at his Mahopac home Tuesday morning, the sheriff’s office announced. Convery was 65.

“We are all absolutely heartbroken,” Sheriff Don Smith said in a press release. “Peter spent most of his adult life giving of himself in conscientious public service to the community and in volunteer activities for many worthy causes. So many, many people liked Peter and loved Peter and we will all miss him very, very much.”

Convery was taken by paramedics to Putnam Hospital Center, where doctors and nurses tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him. Convery was pronounced dead at around 9:30 a.m.

“Peter was a loving and devoted family man, who adored his wife Luanne and their children Caitlin, Courtney, Kerry, Tara and Connor, and their children’s families,” stated Smith. “And he was a very good friend to me.”

Convery joined the Sheriff’s Office in 2002 after retiring as a captain from the Westchester County Department of Corrections. He was a long-time member of the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department, an active Rotarian, and a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Mahopac.
