Protestors Encourage Local Reps to Vote No on Syria

Over 100 protestors gathered at Fountain Plaza in White Plains Friday evening to encourage local representatives to “Vote No on Syria.”

photo (5)As the weekend began to unfold in the city’s downtown people making their way through the group at the plaza seemed responsive, accepting handouts with information on how to contact their local Congressional representatives – Nita Lowey, Eliot Engles, Charles Schumer and Kristen Gillirand. Cars stopping at the light honked horns and several drivers showed thumbs up to signs that read: “No to War”, “Money for Students Not War”, “Engels Vote for Me,” and one that suggested President Obama be impeached.

The gathering sponsored by WESPAC and MoveOn.org encouraged people to sign a “Vote No” petition. Representatives of the groups said both onsite and online signing were positive.

Information handed out to passersby suggested there is no proof who used the chemical weapons in Syria, the government or the rebels; that bombing Syria would cause more death and destruction, more refugees and increased risk of becoming involved in another protracted war; and that the U.S. should work with other countries to achieve an immediate cease fire and negotiated settlement.

There was sentiment that the country needs to focus on solving problems here at home.

The group marched to Nita Lowey’s office, but were told the Congresswoman remained undecided.

The event took about two hours with several protestors camping out overnight.
