The district leaders of the Mount Kisco Democratic Committee voted, by a two-thirds majority, to endorse Thomas Luzio, a former deputy assistant attorney general, for election to the office of mayor of our town.

We did this primarily because his answers to our questions on governmental ethics and preservation of the environment were clear, convincing and more in tune with our democratic values than those of Ms. Lisa Abzun, the other proposed candidate.

Ms. Abzun declined to support a stronger ethics law for Mount Kisco, while Mr. Luzio supports the enactment of a local ethics law with requirements for financial disclosure and real penalties for serious violations.

Mr. Luzio also supports preservation and expansion of public green and open space in the village, while Ms. Abzun actively opposes these initiatives. On the record, she opposed both the acquisition of additional public green space with the use of available funding and the expansion and protection of the town’s historic nature trail network.

Ms. Abzun was also a leading opponent of the town’s gas-powered leaf blower law, claiming publicly that the proposed law would have a negative impact on the profitability of her landscaping business, while dismissing the serious public health impacts resulting from the use of these noise and air polluting machines.

Since governmental ethics and sustainable land use are such high priorities for all of us, we were also disappointed that Ms. Abzun submitted a truncated resume to the committee that omitted her years of professional work in real estate development.

These important factors, combined with Mr. Luzio’s more than 30 years of distinguished public service to the people of Mount Kisco, Westchester County and New York State and his proven ability to listen to and respect all views, led us, the undersigned Democratic district leaders, to add our voices to the committee’s two-thirds majority vote endorsing Tom Luzio to be the next mayor of Mount Kisco.
