Looking Forward to a New Day in Yorktown With Mirchandani

I just watched the debate online and was very happy to hear Jann Mirchandani, candidate for Yorktown supervisor, mention finding ways to help get the Lakeland youth over to the teen center. I had a brief conversation with Jann months ago and raised this concern and I appreciate that it was taken seriously.

The teen center has open gym nights, but for my son and his friends to attend I have to leave work, pick them up, drive them there and then pick them up when it is over. It’s too far for him to get there on his own.

My son and his friends ride bikes to school daily and I am nervous every day he leaves. Not every family has the ability to take time off of work to drive kids to after-school activities, which are important to keep our kids engaged and encourage independence and responsibility.

I have heard a lot about “walkability” in Yorktown, and tragically, just learned of the death of a pedestrian recently. What I appreciate about Mirchandani’s approach is that she looks for creative solutions and means to overcome the obstacles in implementing them. Tom Diana focused only on enforcement rather than finding ways to work with bike riders and walkers to make our town safer.

Mirchandani’s focus on all of Yorktown – finding ways to get Lakeland teens to the teen center and hosting a business summit to showcase all of our hamlets – is much appreciated by those of us who often feel overlooked.

I hope the New Day for Yorktown slate gets elected as they are open to finding ways to include Lakeland students.
