A former Putnam County legislator, who once served as chairman of the board, was arrested earlier this month after he was allegedly found with crack cocaine in the Jefferson Valley Mall parking lot.

Robert McGuigan, who served on the lawmaking body for 12 years, was charged with 5th degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class D felony, according to Yorktown Police.

McGuigan, 60, was sitting in a “suspicious vehicle” on Aug. 1 in the parking lot of JV Mall, according to authorities, and was spotted by a plainclothes officer at about 2:20 p.m. When the officer approached the vehicle, he found the person in the car smoking crack cocaine, police said.

McGuigain was arraigned by Judge Gary Raniolo of Yorktown and was released on his recognizance. When he returned to court last week, the case was adjourned until September, according to The Journal News.
