The house of the future is here today.

For the past week and extending to Thursday, the dasHAUS exhibit has been on display on Court Street in White Plains.

The dasHAUS Pavilion Tour is presented by the German American Chamber of Commerce and is an exhibition designed to get people talking about advanced renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions from Germany.

“The German American Chamber of Commerce realizes that reducing energy use and developing more sustainable energy systems are global issues, which will only be solved through international cooperation,” said Dr. Benno Bunse, President and CEO of the German American Chamber of Commerce.  “We are pleased to present energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies in dasHAUS that are ready to meet these goals today.”

DasHAUS is an integrated, multifaceted structure that demonstrates real-world technologies and solutions for meeting ultra-low energy building standards. It draws inspiration from the Technical University of Darmstadt’s 2007 and 2009 first-place entries in the Solar Decathlon, an international solar house competition presented by the US Department of Energy.

White Plains is one of 12 cities that has shown the dasHAUS exhibit, along with places like Chicago, San Francisco and Washington DC.

“This is really about showcasing German technology,” Meredith Marsh, the dasHAUS Project Co-ordinator said. “The focus is on renewable energy, solar energy and energy efficiency.”

Energy efficient structures like dasHAUS became popular in Germany in the 1990s, after being initially developed in the Northeast. The houses have very good installation and can reduce energy efficiency by up to 90 percent. Panels are integrated in the house to provide shade from sunlight while still being able to run on solar panel.

White Plains was picked to host the exhibit due to Mayor Tom Roach and the New York Power Authority’s advocacy support of the project and White Plains being a green community.

“The people in White Plains are thinking in that direction,” Marsh said.

Roach said he was thrilled to be able to bring dasHAUS to White Plains and show off renewable energy.

“DasHAUS is a wonderful model of energy efficiency for both residential and commercial properties,” Roach said.  “The renewable energy technologies showcased are a terrific example of sustainable solutions that will be a learning tool for families who own homes, students and professionals alike.”
