A letter to the editor this past week attacking former Congressman Mondaire Jones on crime was an unfortunate case study in disinformation. Recent data shows that New York crime is certainly not skyrocketing. In fact, current patterns show quite the opposite.

New data from the NY State Division of Criminal Justice Services shows that violent crime is down across the state. According to the National Council for Home Safety and Security, 38 of the top 50 safest cities in New York are within the Hudson Valley region. And here in Westchester, Yorktown was recently ranked as the safest small town in the nation!

New York City also shows a 5.6% decrease in almost all major crimes compared with 2022 according to the latest NYPD statistics. That’s certainly not an insignificant reduction. What is increasing, however, is the constant fearmonger messaging by Rep. Mike Lawler and MAGA supporters that tries to exploit a mythical increase in crime for political purposes.

The record clearly shows that Mondaire Jones, who is running to return to Congress, puts his constituents’ safety first. He has consistently supported record levels of police funding and has always stood up for our community’s security. To suggest that he’s ‘soft on crime’ is completely disingenuous. Mondaire deserves to be returned to congress to continue improving not just our safety but our lives and the lives of our families.
