Several Yorktown officials and Cookie Monster took part in recent ribbon cutting ceremony of Jake’s Wayback Burgers.

In the Triangle Shopping Center in downtown Yorktown, customers can have a way back dining experience.

Jake’s Wayback Burgers has been offering such fare as burgers, shakes, and hot dogs since October 1. A ribbon cutting opening ceremony was held for the restaurant on December 1.

The eatery is the first business owned by Alvin Kutka of Elmsford and David Pellon of Pleasantville. Why did the partners choose a restaurant that specializes in hamburgers to be their first business? “Burgers are hot right not,” Kutka explained.

Though the establishment has been open for only two months, business has been very good, Kutka said. He stressed that hamburgers sold at his establishment and others in the national chain are hand formed and never frozen.

Burgers are served in a variety of ways at Wayback. Aside from the traditional beef, it also offers garden and turkey burgers. Eleven toppings are offered for free and chili and mushrooms are available for 50 cents each. The Junior Burger is one patty; the Jake Burger is two patties and the Big Jake consists of three patties.

The restaurant also serves such other fare as hot dogs, sandwiches, salads, and sides, including chili, onion rings, fries and house-made potato chips. For those with a sweet tooth, hand-dipped milkshakes are offered in a dozen regular flavors.

Each month, Wayback had a hamburger and shake of the month. The December specials are an eggnog shake and a beef brisket cheeseburger.

“Everything’s made fresh,” Kutka said.

Kutka said he and his partner chose Yorktown for their business because of its family atmosphere. “We felt this type of business would do well here,” he said.

Kutka said Jake’s Wayback Burgers was established with one restaurant in Delaware in 1991. The first restaurant was called Jake’s Hamburger The term Wayback was added to the name in 2010 as a nod to the 1950’s style eateries known for their burgers and shakes, he said.

As stated on its Web site, the décor of  Jake’s Wayback Burgers is a  “warm red bamboard interior with white and stainless steel accents are modeled after the great American roadside burger joints (think Route 66 back before there was such a thing as fast food).

Kutka said another feature of his restaurant is its open kitchen. The restaurant chain has a simple motto, “We have the best burger under the bun,” Kutka said.

Kutka said the goal of the business is to have a longtime relationship with the local community and be in business in Yorktown for many years. Kutka said he and his partner want to “serve the community and work with non-profit organizations.”
