Business of the Week: Spotless Cleaning Systems, Carmel

Cleaning is a chore many choose to leave to for someone else to do and that could not make Bill Pope any happier.

Since 1985, Pope and his family have owned and operated Spotless Cleaning, which is a full-service residential and commercial cleaning business.

“We do all types of cleaning,” said Pope. “Some people have us come in weekly or bi-weekly. Then others have us come in seasonally or right before a big occasion or after a construction project.”

Although Spotless Cleaning Systems started as an overall cleaning company, which was known until 2001 as Spotless Cleaning Services, Pope has taken the time in recent years to become a specialized expert in carpet and upholstery cleaning, as well as with Oriental and Asian rugs.

“Back in 2001 I was working in a commercial building and I used to use a portable run cleaner to handle the floors,” said Pope. “Then a new project manager came in wanted to use a different cleaning company because it had a truck mounted system. So I went out and bought a truck mounted system and it was one of the best things I could have done.”

According to Pope, a truck mounted system is a much more powerful method of cleaning that allows a deeper clean than is possible using a portable system. The truck mounted system produces a higher water pressure than the portable version so it also allows the washing off the cleaning solution better.

“That is important because if some cleaning agent remains in the carpet after cleaning is finished it may cause the carpet to get dirty again even faster, since it will attract more soil and dirt,” said Pope.

Unlike other companies, Spotless Cleaning puts the cleaning agent directly on the carpeting or upholstery rather than mixing it with the water system.

“When you mix the chemicals with the water you run more of a risk of leaving a residue behind,” said Pope.

The truck-mounted system allows Pope to clean tile and grout also. “We can do it all, from simple carpet cleaning to water damage restoration,” he said.

For most jobs, Pope and his staff will the cleaning on-site. “We are usually there for three to five hours and it takes a few more hours to have the carpets dry,” said Pope.

When it comes to the rugs though, it is a different story.

“Those come back to the office,” said Pope. “You have to be very careful with the rugs and people who own them should only allow those who have been properly training to clean them to care for them.”

Pope is an advocate of continually getting educated in the latest techniques. He is certified as a carpet cleaner, which is an important thing for people to ask when they are considering a company.

“Most carpet manufactures have in the warranty that a carpet should be cleaned every 12 to 24 months by a certified carpet cleaning specialist.

In addition to being certified Spotless Cleaning Systems is on Angie’s List and is a member of Ethical Services.com.

“We take what we do very seriously and it shows in our work,” said Pope.

The office for Spotless Cleaning Systems is out of Carmel, but they service clients in Putnam, Dutchess and Westchester.
