Brewster resident Pamela Kaner, 59, may have drowned in Lake Gleneida yesterday evening while attending to a six-year-old girl, according to a statement from New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland.

“We are saddened by the tragedy that occurred last night on Lake Gleneida, and are working with Carmel Police to determine what happened. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” Strickland said.

Reportedly, Kaner and the girl were wading and/or swimming near the shore of the lake.

After an undetermined period of time, two men and a woman in a rowboat on the lake spotted the young girl clinging to something and crying for help in the middle of the lake just before 5:30 p.m. yesterday.

On approach, the trio saw that the girl was clinging to a body that was floating in the lake, now identified as Kaner.

The child was not wearing a life vest, but upon getting the girl in the boat, the two men and woman put a life vest on the six-year-old and brought her to shore. They called 9-1-1 to alert police to the body in the lake.

The Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department dive team responded to the scene, but upon retrieving the body, Kaner was pronounced dead at the scene by a Putnam County Coroner. The child was uninjured in the incident.

In addition to the DEP Police, which has authority over the lake since it is part of the New York City water shed, the Carmel Police Department, the New York State Police, the Putnam County Sheriff’s office, and Carmel firefighters and volunteer ambulance responded to the scene.

The cause of Kaner’s death is unknown at this time.
