A Brewster man was killed Monday in a car crash in Southeast, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Patrick Gavaghan, 79, was apparently traveling westbound on Route 312 in Southeast when he collided with a car driven by 18-year-old Brewster resident Ann Chandini Garg at the street’s intersection with Independent Way, according to the sheriff’s office. Garg was driving northbound on Independent Way and allegedly failed to yield the right of way to Gavaghan, slamming into his driver’s side door, according to a preliminary investigation by the sheriff’s office.
When the sheriff’s office responded to the scene, Gavaghan was trapped inside his vehicle, police said. He was extricated by the Brewster Fire Department, treated by TransCare paramedics and then taken by ambulance to Danbury Hospital in Connecticut, where he died hours later, according to the sheriff’s office.
Garg was issued a traffic summons for failing to yield the right of way, police said. She and Betty Gavaghan, a passenger in Patrick Gavaghan’s car, were both uninjured, according to police. The sheriff’s office reported the investigation is ongoing.
