Brewster Grad Killed in Crash

We are part of The Trust Project

Family and friends came together Monday evening to remember a Brewster High School graduate.

Eighteen-year-old Steve D’Ottavio died in a car crash in the early hours of Aug. 20 while visiting a friend in Michigan.

Zeeland, Mich. police chief William Olney said D’Ottavio was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:08 a.m. last Tuesday after his vehicle going northbound ran a flashing red light and collided with a car coming eastbound.

The police are still investigating the accident, particularly the toxicology report to see if D’Ottavio had consumed alcohol prior to driving. Olney wasn’t sure when the reports would be back.

A friend in the car with D’Ottavio was in a coma from the crash last week, but Olney said he wasn’t certain if his condition had changed since then.

The intersection in which D’Ottavio crashed isn’t uncommon to accidents, Olney said.

“It’s the heaviest traveled intersection in our city so obviously you’re going to have more accidents there,” Olney said. “It’s just been unfortunate in the last couple years we’ve had several fatalities there.”

D’Ottavio’s funeral is Tuesday at Beecher Funeral Home in Brewster and his burial will follow at St. Lawrence O’Toole Cemetery. Visiting hours were this past Monday.
