Assumption That Lawler Wouldn’t Protect Social Security Was Far Off-Base

I was surprised to see the Apr. 2 letter asserting that our congressman, Rep. Mike Lawler, plans to cut Social Security and Medicare (“Lawler’s Promise to Preserve Social Security is Hard to Believe”).
Voters saw Lawler’s interview on “Morning Joe” last month, where he categorically rejected any proposals that would cut these programs. If they’re looking for more proof, they’ll see his consistent stance on this matter, going back to before he even ran for Congress. Lawler is not a member of the organization that drafted the proposed cuts to Medicare and Social Security, and he has plainly stated he won’t endorse their plan or vote for any cuts to these programs.
The author of the Apr. 2 letter insists that Republicans can’t be trusted, full stop, simply because we’re Republicans. That’s ludicrous. We’re in a sorry state when voters no longer see their neighbors as fellow Americans.
Every citizen should have expectations for their elected leaders, and we should hold them to the commitments they make. Making blatantly false statements about their positions or their record, however, is not going to bring trust and transparency back into political debate. You’re welcome to your opinions, but not your own facts.
