Alyce N. Coqueran and Others Honored at Yankee Stadium

We are part of The Trust Project
On Wednesday June 5, at Yankee Stadium, 27 members of the Coqueran Family gathered to remember their late matriarch Alyce N. Coqueran. It was the day before her June 6 birthday. Alyce Coqueran passed away on December 29, 2012.

Each year Ken Gamble hosts his own Opening Day at Yankee Stadium. Gamble will invite about 300 people, including family, friends and clients to Yankee Stadium for a friendly reunion, while routing for the New York Yankees.

Gamble inherited the tradition from his late father Frank Gamble, who began the Gamble Opening Day at Yankee Stadium in 1976. As close friends of the Gamble Family I, and my friend Martha Richman, have been constant attendees to Ken Gamble’s Opening Day each year.  However, this year Gamble extended a very special courtesy to the Coqueran Family.

My mother Alyce Coqueran passed away, on December 29, 2012, just as the New Year was upon us. She was a born and raised in Tarrytown, and remained a resident of the village her entire life.

Gamble and his wife Patsy attended my mother’s services. As they departed Coffey Funeral Home, they said to me, we hope to see you at our Opening Day this year, and invite your entire family.

Coincidently, Gamble’s Opening Day at Yankee Stadium this year, occurred on Wednesday, June 5, the day before my mother’s birthday, on June 6. Alyce Norbert Charles Coqueran was born June 6, 1926. This was the Coqueran Family’s first June 6, without having the matriarch of our family with us to celebrate her birthday.

Nonetheless, with the meaningful and gallant gesture by Gamble withstanding, and as die-hard Yankees fans with a chance to celebrate the birthday of Alyce Coqueran, at Yankee Stadium; 27 members of the Coqueran Family traveled from as far as California to remember and pay tribute to the matriarch of our family.

My mother, Alyce Coqueran was a community activist, who was one of the original Founders and Board Members of the Tarrytown Community Center. She also served on the Board of Commissioners for the Tarrytown Municipal Housing Authority for 27 years and was on the Board of the Neighborhood House for six years. She was very involved as a senior citizen with the Tarrytown Seniors and was the Site Manager for the Tarrytown Nutrition Program for Seniors for the Town of Greenburgh for 15 years. She was inducted into the Westchester County Senior Citizens Hall of Fame in 2009.

The New York Yankees displayed a fitting tribute to the late Alyce N. Coqueran, a lifelong Tarrytown resident, on their scoreboard on Wednesday, June 5, during the Yankees versus Cleveland Indians game, with 27 members of the Coqueran Family in attendance. Photo by Kirsten Robinson.

The Yankees being aware of my mother’s passing and that the Coqueran Family was gathering at Yankee Stadium on June 5, to celebrate her birthday, gave Alyce Coqueran the ultimate tribute:  they displayed on the Yankee Stadium scoreboard in the middle of the fifth inning, “New York Yankees Remember Alyce N. Coqueran.”

The Coqueran Family extends their appreciation to Ken and Patsy Gamble for their generosity to help bring about this special day. We also thank the N.Y. Yankees for paying tribute to a wonderful lady and giving her a win on her special day.

Yankees Deborah A. Tymon Honored by U.S Army

New York Yankees Senior Vice President of Marketing Deborah A. Tymon received the “Outstanding Civilian Service Award” from the United States Army for her many years of support of the U.S Armed Forces.

During her 15 years working in the Yankees office, Tymon has organized many events at Yankee Stadium for members of the military, veterans and their families.

Tymon was instrumental in developing the Yankees relationship with the Wounded Warriors Project and is a regular contributor to the Wounded Warriors Soldier Ride each year. She has also organized the donation of thousands of tickets to Yankees games to active military members and veterans and was very involved with creation of Military Appreciation Day at Yankee Stadium.

Tymon’s untiring efforts, on behalf of the Yankees, to organize and supervise the delivery of thousands of care packages with clothing, snacks, books, and memorabilia to servicemen and servicewoman in Iraq and Afghanistan, was also recognized by the U.S. Army.

“Over the years I have had the privilege of meeting countless members of the armed services. Their stories of sacrifice always leave me breathless,” said Tymon. “It has been my honor to give back to them with the support of the Yankees and show them the appreciation they deserve,” declared Tymon.

Tymon was presented the “Outstanding Civilian Service Award” by General Ray Odierno, the Chief of Staff of the United States Army, at Whipple Field, in Fort Myers, Virginia, on May 22. The “Outstanding Civilian Service Award” is the third-highest public service honor the U.S. Army can bestow upon a civilian.
