I strongly support Lisa Abzun for mayor of Mount Kisco. Her experiences, talents and calm, caring personality have been described in letters, articles and on social media. This letter is to explain why her opponent has not won me over.

Tom Luzio’s responses at the candidate’s forum were very general. His flyer also has generalities, but with veiled suggestions that the state of our town, its governance and the board’s connections to state, county and other towns are bad. My observations and those of people I talk to when knocking on doors and speaking with elected officials are quite different.

Tom proudly claims a lengthy career as a prosecutor, working for Democratic and Republican Westchester County district attorneys, but not Mimi Rocah, the current D.A. He moved to Mount Kisco about seven years ago. The lack of variety in his background and his relatively short time in our town would not be disqualifying if he demonstrated any respect for civic organizations. He appears to think that only salaried work counts. As strange as it sounds, he has expressed reluctance at getting to know people in the town because that would make him beholden. To me this indicates that he has little faith in his own ethics.

Tom stated at the forum that he had watched Town Board meetings on Zoom for two to three months, a period corresponding to his candidacy, and, as a result, he knows everything that went on, including things that nobody else knew. Tom said he did not contribute ideas at the meetings because he was not yet an elected official. This does not acknowledge the input of regular residents at the meetings.

Based on his experiences as a prosecutor, he believes he can make deals, and this is how he views the mayor’s position. Making plea deals with criminal suspects is not the same as being mayor and listening to residents with varying views and determining what is best for the town.

Lisa will come to the position of mayor with strong, positive relationships with the people of Mount Kisco, Village Board members, residents, fellow business owners, elected officials and staff of Westchester County and New York State. She has earned our support.

Early voting started June 17.  Primary Day is June 27.
