I am reminded of the book, “The Political Brain,” when I think about the Democratic race for Mount Kisco mayor between Lisa Azbun and Tom Luzio.

In a recent forum held in Mount Kisco, Lisa focused on the important issues and gave clear explanations of what local government is doing to address community concerns.

What I found interesting about Luzio is that while running as a Democrat, his positions seem to be more clearly aligned with Republicans. In the book I mentioned, the author talks about the fact that more conservative people react more strongly to messages based on fear. I found Luzio to use the playbook made infamous by Donald Trump and other MAGA politicians – complain about everything that’s not being done and focus on conspiracy theories and fear mongering. I’m not surprised that Luzio is masquerading as a Democrat, since it’s almost impossible to win an election in many northern Westchester communities as a Republican.

I have known Lisa for about 10 years, and since I frequently volunteer as a photographer/videographer for village events, I’ve had the pleasure of having frequent conversations with her. I don’t think I have ever been to an event where Lisa was not present. In contrast, I have never seen Luzio volunteering or attending a village event.

I have found Lisa to be one of the most genuine, caring people I have ever met. She is smart and a great listener. Lisa has been a champion for the arts, a friend of the environment, concerned with public safety and a compassionate ally to our immigrant community, well before her involvement in local government.

I do want to mention some concerning political maneuvers used by Luzio and his supporters. It has been well-documented that the head of the village Democratic Committee obtained what turned out to be fraudulent signatures to help get Luzio on the ballot. During the candidates’ forum, I noticed that Luzio addressed Lisa by her maiden name, which was inappropriate and clearly an effort to upset her. Lisa was quick to correct Luzio, while maintaining her composure.

During a recent political event held in Mount Kisco in support of Lisa, Mrs. Luzio and a member of the Democratic Committee chose to stand within 10 feet of Lisa and her volunteers, handing out campaign material and interrupting the scheduled event. Mount Kisco is better than this and no place for this type of politics.

I have lived with my family in the village for 29 years, and since Gina Picinich took over as mayor, the quality of life has improved significantly. I mentioned to my wife that I would never move from this wonderful, caring community. We must not let the conservative squeaky wheels take over the village government. The old expression: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” comes to mind.

Please keep Mount Kisco a wonderful place to live by voting for Lisa Azbun on June 27.
