Traffic Signal Falls on P’ville’s Manville Road; Street Reopened
A short stretch of Manville Road in Pleasantville was closed Wednesday afternoon and into the evening after the traffic signals at the intersection with Wheeler Avenue suddenly fell just short of hitting the pavement.
Shortly before 2 p.m., it appears that a tie holding one of the wires to a pole next to Dunkin’ Donuts at Manville Road and Washington Avenue gave way, said Village Administrator Eric Morrissey.
“It seemed that a piece of that, the tie had snapped and the traffic lights have come down on top of the secondary Con Ed wire and is also leaning on the cable wire, which is the lowest hanging wire,” Morrissey said. “So it’s almost touching the street.”
Pleasantville police quickly responded to block all vehicular and pedestrian traffic along Manville Road from Memorial Plaza to Washington Avenue. Traffic detours were set up in the area.
Manville Road was reopened about 10 p.m. Wednesday, police said. No pedestrians or vehicles were struck by the falling lights or drooping wires, he said.
Con Edison and the state Department of Transportation (DOT) were notified following the incident and the village awaited the arrival of crews Wednesday afternoon from the utility and the company that maintains and repairs the traffic lights, Morrissey said. Power was cut by Con Edison to the affected wire, he said.
