Captain Lawrence to Leave Pleasantville
After five years, the Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. will be leaving Pleasantville.
Owner and head brewer Scott Vaccaro said Thursday morning that the company is planning to vacate its space on Castleton Street and move to a location that is more than twice the size at 444 Saw Mill River Road in Elmsford.
He said rapid growth of the company has made it necessary for the brewery to move out of its 8,000-square-foot home. Last year Captain Lawrence brewed 6,500 barrels of beer, 10 times the amount brewed in the first year.
“It’s definitely bittersweet but we really had to make the move,” said Vaccaro, a Pleasantville resident.
The new home, which Vaccaro hopes to move into by the end of the year, will be about 18,250 square feet, with the possibility to expand an additional 5,000 square feet. As critical as square footage is, the 22.5-foot ceilings are also high enough to accommodate new equipment. As a result, for the first time the company will be able to package beers in 12-ounce bottles, something they had been dreaming about for a long time, Vaccaro said.
Pleasantville Chamber of Commerce President William Flooks said the organization was informed by Vaccaro of the move last month. While an effort was made to stay in the village, there was no suitable location within Pleasantville.
“He’s a good guy. We’re sad to see him go,” Flooks said.
Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner said in a statement that he was pleased to attract Captain Lawrence to town and hopes to have more news about other economic development opportunities.
“Greenburgh is an attractive place to do business in,” Feiner said. “We’re going to continue to work hard to attract quality new businesses to our town.”
