Peekskill Seeks Developers for Lower South St. Area

We are part of The Trust Project

The City of Peekskill is seeking commercial/retail developers for 12.7 acres on Lower South Street where a Target store was proposed several years ago.

The land is accessible from the Louisa Street and Welcher Avenue exits off Route 9 and has been targeted by city officials as prime property to boost economic development and employment opportunities.

“The Lower South Street redevelopment area is a once in a lifetime investment opportunity for a forward-thinking developer. This is a priority project for the city,” said Mayor Mary Foster. “This development will replace the old recycling facility and junk yard and create a destination center for businesses and stores. It will create employment opportunities for Peekskill residents, bring new shoppers and generate additional tax revenue.”

In 2009, Peekskill bought a portion of the 12.7 acres for $3.5 million from Ginsburg Development Corporation. It is currently in contract to acquire an additional four acres. The city’s Department of Public Works currently utilizes the garages from the former Karta Recycling facility.

City officials are encouraging interested developers to be innovative in their proposals to complement Peekskill’s downtown, waterfront and other business sectors. Responses are due to City Hall no later than 11 a.m. on September 14.

“We are prepared to assist developers and investors to make this development project a reality,” said James Slaughter, Peekskill’s director of economic development. “With an emphasis on attracting high quality national/regional retailers and the right commercial businesses, this will be an economic and employment boost to the entire region.”
