More than a dozen neglected cats were rescued by the SPCA of Westchester from a private Yorktown residence Thursday night.

The responders received an anonymous tip from the SPCA’a Humane Law Enforcement hotline.

The caller told the SPCA that the owners of the premises were hospitalized and the cats were not being taken care of, according to Lisa Bonanno, a spokesperson for SPCA of Westchester.

Agents of the SPCA along with Yorktown Animal Control entered the premises and were confronted by extreme filth, Bonanno said. “Garbage and waste were strewn about the house; rugs and furniture were stained with urine, and feces were piled in virtually every room,” she added. “The walls and ceiling of the house were crumbling in many rooms and the odor so overwhelming that the premise was unfit for occupation by human or animal.”

16 cats were seized, many of whom were living inside the walls and ceiling, according to Bonanno.

The animals were taken to the SPCA of Westchester in Briarcliff Manor and are being treated for ear and skin infections. Providing an investigation, the cats will be made available to the public for adoption.
